The kitchen is one of the busiest places in the home. In order to enjoy working here efficiently, one would expect to have a well organized workspace. As many of us do, we tend to end up with a disorganized kitchen over time for varying reasons. There comes a time when organizing your kitchen will become necessary. Here are some practical ideas for doing this.
The first step is to sort out all the items in your kitchen. Start with the drawers as this is the easiest place to start. Make two piles of your items – one for items to be kept, the other for those that are not required and should be thrown out, donated or sold in a garage sale. Do this for all the other places in the kitchen, including the pots, pans, foodstuff, etc.
Since you want to start fresh, next task is to physically clean the storage spaces. Wash, wipe and spray the areas as required. You may consider installing shelf or drawer paper as well.
Before putting back all the items on shelves and drawers, plan your movement within the kitchen so that there is a natural flow from one area to the next when preparing and cooking meals. Your cooking utensils like pots and pans should be close to the stove. Spices should be stored close to your preparation area.
Once you have decided where all the items should be stored, ensure that you have appropriate storage racks, shelving or drawers for your items. A spice rack is an ideal item for storing your spices. Depending on the layout of your kitchen, you can consider one for inside a cupboard or one that is wall mounted if space permits. Door racks are another neat idea for storing rolled up foil or paper. Separators in drawers for cutlery helps to find the knife or fork when it is required.
Remember to store only the items that you need. If you have a pantry, in addition to storing the dry food items, you should consider keeping your small electrical appliances there as well. It allows you greater counter space for other needs like food preparation, and makes it look a lot tidier and less cluttered.
In locating your refrigerator, take into consideration the opening direction of the door. Too many times this is not addressed.
By following the above recommendations for organizing your kitchen, you will end up with a clean, tidy, uncluttered kitchen that will be a welcoming place for preparing and cooking your meals.
